About

To create one’s world in any of the arts takes courage

Marianne Schovsbo

Born in Denmark, Marianne Schovsbo had her first lessons in art alongside her grandmother, a watercolorist, who traveled the Danish and Swedish landscapes in search of beautiful places to paint. Her grandmother instilled in Marianne, a deep respect for the natural landscape.

Arriving in Canada in the mid ‘70’s, Marianne received formal and classical art training with Ingeborg Raymer at the Shadbolt Centre for Arts near Vancouver, British Columbia. Under the tutelage and apprenticeship of Ingeborg, Marianne developed her classical techniques, but also how to see the world in different ways, as well as how to incorporate movement and feeling into her work.  Marianne’s love and inspiration of landscapes were continued during the many hours she spent outdoors drawing and painting the lakes, gardens and rural areas around Vancouver.

Throughout her university studies, Marianne worked as a freelance artist, etching detailed drawings and exploring various mixed media. She also moved into and experimented with larger scale landscape pieces, using charcoal, watercolor, ink as well as oil pastel.

Though she continues to explore, over time oil painting has become Marianne’s primary media. The versatile nature of oil mediums allow Marianne to play with perspective and create the feelings of depth and free flowing movement in rich colors.  She loves to tease and play with brush strokes, and if you take a closer look at Marianne’s originals, you can see and enjoy the swirling brushwork style.

Marianne has sold, collaborated, rented and donated her paintings to corporate and private collections in Canada, the US and Europe. Her paintings hang in public spaces and homes.

Marianne now lives and paints on Bainbridge Island, Washington.  She continues to be inspired by, and to capture the beauty of the many wild landscapes she travels through or imagines.
